Individual, Couples and Group Therapy

Maya Folkman

"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate."

In the spirit of Carl Gustav Jung

Psychotherapy for adults and young people aged 16+ · Clinic in Herzliya and online

My approach to therapy

I believe that much of our lives takes place in places we are not aware of at all. Old patterns, fears, shame, guilt, and the ways we learned to protect ourselves can drive us again and again, sometimes long after they have stopped serving us. And so we find ourselves time after time in the same relationships, the same anger, the same sense of being stuck, without understanding why.

To me, therapy is an opportunity to go down into the basement of the soul, where the unconscious lives, and try to turn on a light there. To get to know what drives us, to understand where it comes from, to allow ourselves to feel what we have grown used to not feeling, and in doing so to create a small space between what we feel and what we do. In that small space lies our freedom to choose. Therapy is the place where a person can tell apart what happened to them, who they learned to be in order to cope with it, and who they can choose to be today.

Who I work with

I offer individual therapy for adults and young people (16+), couples and family therapy, parental guidance, and clinical supervision for therapists.

Over the years I have worked with women and men, mothers and fathers, couples, groups, and teenagers, in both the public and private sectors. These encounters taught me how alike we are in our basic human needs: to feel loved, to belong, to be understood and to feel safe. And how different each of us is in the way we experience the world, cope with pain, form connections and ask for help. With this in mind, I meet every person with curiosity and openness, without assuming in advance what is right for them or what they need.

My experience includes working with people facing trauma and life crises, difficulties in relationships and intimacy, addiction, risk behaviors and complex life situations, as well as issues of sexuality, alternative relationships, and the processing of psychedelic experiences.

Areas of practice

  • Anxiety, depression and emotional distress
  • Trauma
  • Difficulties in couplehood, intimacy and relationships
  • Personal, couple and family crises
  • Parenthood, fatherhood and motherhood
  • Relationships between parents and their children, including adult children
  • Self-image and self-worth
  • Shame, guilt, anger and emotional regulation
  • Risk behaviors, addiction and violence
  • Integration and processing of psychedelic experiences
  • Separation, loss and life transitions
  • Recurring patterns and feeling stuck
  • Self-exploration, deepening awareness and personal growth

You don't have to be in crisis to come to therapy. Sometimes the wish to understand ourselves better, to recognize the patterns that follow us, or to live a little more freely and consciously is reason enough.

What does therapy with me look like?

"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change."

Carl Rogers

My approach is integrative, drawing mainly on psychodynamic, relational, psychoanalytic and humanistic thinking, alongside tools from Gestalt and EMDR. I see each person as a whole of body, mind, emotion and thought, and their life story as part of a larger story. After all, we inherit far more than DNA from our parents, and the experiences, relationships and patterns that shaped us stay with us in the present. In therapy we try to get to know them, understand what drives us, and discover what we want to keep carrying and what we can finally put down.

Because so much of who we are is shaped within relationships, change can happen within them too. That is why I see the therapeutic relationship as an essential part of the therapy itself. I come to each session with professional knowledge and experience, but also with humility and curiosity, knowing that the person in front of me is the expert on themselves. I don't have ready-made answers about the person sitting across from me, and I have a genuine wish to discover together.

In the room I am fully present. I ask, think together, reflect, sometimes challenge and sometimes laugh. Along the way, images and stories from different worlds find their way in, from philosophy and Buddhism to music, fairy tales and Disney films.

Above all, it matters to me that we can be human. Trust isn't built because a website says I'm a therapist you can rely on. As I see it, the burden of proof is on me, always. It takes time to build a space where we can bring what we usually hide, a space where it is okay to be angry, to disagree, to show need, or to feel embarrassed. Sometimes I feel embarrassed too. That's okay. We can talk about that as well.

About me

I am a clinical criminologist (M.A.), psychotherapist, and couples and family therapist, with more than a decade of experience working with individuals, couples, families and groups.

Over the years I have worked in a range of therapeutic settings, including in the fields of sexual abuse, trauma, risk behaviors, violence and complex life situations, alongside my work in private practice.

I love my work and the human encounter it makes possible. It is a great privilege to accompany people through processes of coping, discovery and change, and to witness moments of courage and vulnerability, as well as the small moments when something that was stuck begins to move.

Alongside the knowledge and experience I have gained, I keep learning in every session. In many ways, my clients are my most meaningful university. Even after all these years, I still find myself surprised, moved, and learning from the people I meet.
